The Energy and Power Engineering major of Beijing Institute of Technology was founded in 1950 (formerly the Internal Combustion Engine Major). In 1981, vehicle engineering (including internal combustion engines) was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees. In 1987, the doctoral program was approved by the State Council to become a national key discipline. In 1993, a postdoctoral mobile station was established.
