Beijing Institute of Technology's "Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments" major originated from the "Optical Instrument Design and Manufacturing" undergraduate major established in China in 1953, and began to recruit graduate students in this major at the same time. Professor Ma Shixiu, a famous physicist who went to France for work-study studies in his early years, serves as the professional director, and Rusinov, an internationally renowned optical design expert, served as the honorary director of the major. With the development of the major, especially in 1959, Soviet experts came to China to give lectures and help with the construction of the major. In 1960, the major was divided into "Optical Instruments", "Optical System Design and Inspection", "Night Vision Technology and Instruments" and "Photography and Remote Sensing Technology"; in the 1980s, the "Optical System Design and Inspection" major was renamed and merged. It is divided into "Applied Optics" and "Detection Technology and Instruments"; in 1998, according to the professional names stipulated by the State Education Commission, except "Night Vision Technology and Instruments" which was classified into another major, the others were re-grouped into "Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments".
